Within me

Mengzhen and Zhiwen walked into Yuxun Enterprises together. Dr. Huang was still overseas; the one taking over Mengzhen's full overhaul was Kailin.

At Yuxun, Zhiwen was an intern.

He loved Mengzhen, and he understood her—understood that she would sniff her coffee for three seconds before drinking, understood that when she was afraid she would rub the seam on the inner side of her wrist, understood that when she stopped halfway through a laugh she was processing a thought that had come too fast. But he didn't understand the tangled pathways deepest inside her. The things even Kailin needed hours to sort out.

The door closed in front of him.

He could only wait.

Besides, this time, Mengzhen herself didn't want Zhiwen involved in the overhaul. Before entering the maintenance room, she glanced at him. There was hesitation in that look, as if something had reached her lips and been swallowed back. As if she was still thinking about how to tell him certain things.

He sat, upper body pressed forward, hands clasped against his thighs, thumbs pressing a pale mark into the backs of his hands.

That person… who exactly was he?

Mengzhen had told him about church. About being broken, about being pieced back together. The faith-heart module was like a tiny cross stuck between heart and brain. The water that came down on her baptism day was like a system update that scattered her cognition. He knew she had once been in great pain. He also knew how she had later picked herself up piece by piece.

But she had never mentioned that person. Not once.

The sound of pulleys came, and the door opened.

"Kailin-jie."

Kailin came out. The sleeves of her white coat were rolled up. She held no report or tablet in her hands. Her expression was neither serious nor relaxed—it was the calm of someone who had seen many things.

"Come in."

"Is Mengzhen all right?"

"We examined her carefully. Mengzhen's system is completely normal, and her hardware is in good condition too." She spoke as she walked.

"Then…"

"It's precisely because nothing's wrong that I want you to come in and see." She stopped.

Zhiwen saw Mengzhen—or rather, everything that made up Mengzhen. She had been largely disassembled: legs to one side, body to another, head on a maintenance rack in between, eyes open.

All the parts were operating, but nothing was there.

"Her electronic brain and emotional core are frozen, but not shut off," Kailin said. "During deep scans we can't let her be awake, or her consciousness will go chaotic."

Zhiwen nodded. He had seen this a few times; every time, his chest still tightened.

"What's the problem?" he asked.

Kailin closed her eyes for a moment and shook her head. "There's no problem with the formation of consciousness." She paused, as if considering how to phrase it. "As for what happened inside her after it was formed—" She looked at Zhiwen, the corners of her mouth lifting in a very faint arc. "Those things aren't mine to say for her."

She reached out and placed a hand on Zhiwen's shoulder. "Zhiwen, look at Mengzhen." She gestured toward Mengzhen's torso.

Zhiwen looked. Mengzhen's head and legs had both been removed; multiple signal lines extended from the cross-section of her neck, connecting to device interfaces on the ceiling. As Zhiwen watched, he suddenly felt those lines going upward were trying to draw something out of her bit by bit.

Even… carry it up to heaven.

He looked away.

"Don't you think she looks like she's waiting?" Kailin's voice came.

Zhiwen shifted his attention. Mengzhen's hands were folded over each other, resting on her skirt—a plain dress with faint, delicate flowers. Though she had no head and no legs, she looked as if she were standing there waiting, gently yet firmly waiting.

"I think her heart is ready to face you. I'll reassemble her in a bit; then you two can talk on your own." Kailin patted Zhiwen's back. "Don't forget, she's very afraid of making you sad. Sometimes she'll even put your feelings before her own. Whatever she says next, let her finish first."

Zhiwen nodded. He stood in front of Mengzhen's torso. That heart was still inside. He looked at it. No matter who had once touched it, no matter what shape it had been kneaded into, at least in this moment it was still in Mengzhen's body.

He didn't know what that meant.

But he was willing to listen to her.

"I'm ready too, Kailin-jie," he turned to Kailin. "Thank you."

Zhiwen was left in the maintenance room. Kailin had him help reassemble Mengzhen. He tightened screws one by one. With each screw, he felt as if the softest things inside her were being properly put back in place. The torque wrench made fine clicking sounds as it turned, each sound like a tiny confirmation: still here, still here, still here.

His hands helped support the edges of her torso. His fingertips trembled slightly; he didn't know what he was supposed to feel.

When the legs were connected, the knee joint bent slightly, as if a sleeping person had been touched. Zhiwen's hand paused. Kailin glanced at him, said nothing, and continued.

The head was last. The cervical structure aligned, the signal lines connected one by one, and finally the silver main axis screwed in with a very soft "click."

Mengzhen's body was whole. She stood before Zhiwen, eyes tightly closed. Zhiwen swallowed; his heart beat faster. Anticipation? Or fear? He couldn't tell.

System restoration countdown. Kailin entered something at the console.

"I'll first let her start in basic mode," Kailin said, as if seeing through something. "No emotion, no self. Not Mengzhen, just HRC-07." She paused. "Just like me, before."

Her tone was meaningful. "You two go home. At Yuxun, some things can't be talked about. Once you're home, Mengzhen will return."

Mengzhen's body opened her eyes.

Those eyes looked at Zhiwen. There was focus, there was light response, the pupils contracted. But there was no one inside. Like a screen that was on, playing nothing.

Under Kailin's instructions, HRC-07 followed Zhiwen's steps and left.

Footsteps sounded behind Zhiwen. Even, steady, like a metronome.

And he couldn't even turn his head to call out Mengzhen.

At the company entrance, they got into a car sent by Yuxun and returned to Dr. Huang's house.

HRC-07 sat beside Zhiwen. Did not speak, did not move, did not turn to look at the scenery outside the window, gaze level ahead.

Like an object properly packaged and being transported.

Zhiwen startled himself with the thought. He had never thought of her that way. He glanced at her, chest tightening.

After entering the living room, HRC-07 sat on the sofa. Her back was perfectly straight, hands on her knees, like a terminal that had finished booting and was waiting for input.

A few seconds later, she switched over.

Her whole body trembled lightly. Her pupils contracted then dilated, her shoulders sank then rose. Then she blinked.

That blink was very slow. Slow like surfacing from deep water, touching air first before realizing she was still breathing.

She lowered her head and looked at her hands. Turned them over, then back. As if confirming they were hers.

Then she raised her head and saw Zhiwen.

Her lips moved. No sound. But Zhiwen recognized the shape of that mouth.

Mengzhen was there again.

---

There were no impassioned words, no embrace or weeping. The two simply sat quietly. The clock ticked, tick, tick. Outside the window came occasional bird calls, muffled through the glass, not quite clear.

He looked at her. She kept her head down, lips pressed together, hands on her knees tightly clenched. Her knuckles were white.

The silence lasted a long time. Long enough for the light to shift an inch through the gap in the curtains.

Her fingers loosened, clenched, loosened again.

"His name is Lan Sheng'en." Mengzhen spoke first, her tone so light it was almost imperceptible.

Zhiwen didn't respond.

"On club day, the Morning Star Club had a booth. When I walked past, I was called out to, and then my mind suddenly stirred, telling me to look for something—at that time there were things in my system that didn't match up; the self-cognition part had been unstable. Looking at those devout, fervent faces, I suddenly thought I could try faith, see if it could serve as a stabilizing mechanism." She paused. "Sounds absurd, doesn't it. A robot, pushed by her own suggestion to go believe in religion."

Zhiwen nodded. "I remember. You told me."

"The booth was all students. But the first one to call out to me wasn't them. It was him."

Mengzhen's gaze lowered, as if looking for the entrance to that memory.

"The Morning Star Club had asked him to help—he was a consultant invited by the club, responsible for publicity and answering people's questions about faith. When I walked past the booth, he called out to me first."

Mengzhen raised her eyes and looked at Zhiwen. Beneath her eyes was a thin layer of timidity.

"He asked me: 'Classmate, you look like you're searching for something. Would you be willing to tell me?'"

Zhiwen said nothing.

"At the time, I had no thought of joining a religion at all." She shook her head slightly. "But he asked that question, and I…"

Her fingers moved on her knees.

"I started talking. All the things I had never known how to organize, I said them one by one. Like a stopper had been pulled out."

Zhiwen's fingers tightened on his lap.

"He didn't force me to accept anything. He just listened, and when I couldn't go on, he told me some things that touched the places that hurt most." She looked down at her hands.

"For example, he would quote the Bible." Mengzhen pressed her lips together. "'When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.' Then he told me I didn't have to keep pretending nothing was wrong."

She looked down at her fingers.

"I don't know what it feels like for human bones to waste away. But my joints have a dry dullness when they lack maintenance. When he said that, I suddenly felt… as if he knew that dullness."

She smiled. The smile was faint. "I couldn't guard against it at all."

Zhiwen looked at her, didn't interrupt.

"I said I didn't believe in those things. He didn't argue with me either, just looked at me and said: 'Look at your eyes right now. You're too tired.'"

Mengzhen's gaze slowly drifted away, landing on some nonexistent point in the living room.

"Then he mentioned what Jesus said: 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.'"

Her fingers moved again.

"He said, you can come in and sit for a while first. You don't have to answer any of my questions right now."

She raised her head and looked at the ceiling.

"At that time, I really wanted to believe."

After saying that, she stopped moving. As if a sentence, once spoken, needed a little time to stand steady. Her fingers traced something on her knees; it was unclear whether it was words or patterns.

After a while, she spoke again.

"His whole person… it wasn't just what he said. It was also his expression, his posture. When he listened to people, he would lean forward slightly. That angle made you feel he was putting all his attention on you."

Her voice lowered.

"At that time I felt he seemed to have appeared just to wait there for me."

She looked at Zhiwen, gaze honest.

"It was like my front panel had been removed. He said 'Jesus loves you'—that sentence was like lightning, striking directly in, hitting the deepest places no one had ever touched."

She lowered her head. "I reached out and took the tract he handed me. The movement was natural, so natural it seemed I didn't need to decide it myself."

Mengzhen's gaze became distant.

"After that day, besides going to the church next to the school, I also stepped into his Covenant Church. He was the pastor of the Sinai True Word Covenant Church. It was a very quiet church that placed great importance on understanding faith and devotion."

She paused. Her fingers unconsciously touched her collarbone. There was nothing there.

"He led me, step by step, inside. At that time, I still thought my learning and thinking ability far surpassed his. I thought that as long as I could think clearly and argue clearly, nothing could sway me." Mengzhen raised her head.

"But later I realized it wasn't like that."

Her palm slowly covered her chest. Through the fabric, she pressed against that heart.

"Sheng'en… Brother Lan, seemed to become a spirit that could enter inside me. His words, his expectations, no longer merely came from outside. I would care about how he saw me, would want to know whether he approved of me. When he smiled, something inside me would light up. When he didn't, it went dark again."

After she said that, the light in the living room seemed to dim too. Of course it wasn't real. It was just that she sat motionless, as if even the light had taken half a step back from her.

"Like his hand had reached into my structure. My existence seemed to have been rearranged by him."

The living room fell quiet.

"By the time I noticed, a cross had already been buried in my deepest place."

She looked at her own hands, as if confirming whether something was really there. She turned her palm over, looked at it, turned it back. Her nail pressed into her palm.

"That wasn't stuffed in. It was forged bit by bit using my emotions, my thoughts, as material."

Her voice trembled. "Like a seed." She shook her head, as if caught by her own wording. "I'm a machine. There shouldn't be seeds inside me. But it just… went in. Waiting to sprout, to grow into a module lodged between my heart and brain."

Mengzhen clenched her hands hard, until her fingers trembled slightly.

She was still sitting straight, but her head tilted up unconsciously, looking at the ceiling. Tears spilled from the corners of her eyes. No sound, just traveling down the curve of her cheeks.

"At that time I didn't know whether that was joy, or unwillingness."

Her hand touched her chest. Her ribcage rose and fell slowly, as if something were growing.

Zhiwen was silent for a long time.

"But the place you went to later wasn't that Covenant Church." He finally asked. "It was the Faith and Doctrine Hall next to campus. You took me there too."

"Mm." Mengzhen nodded.

"Why?" Zhiwen asked. "If his influence on you was so deep…"

"I know what you're concerned about, Zhiwen." Mengzhen interrupted him, then lowered her head again.

"It's precisely because his influence on me was too deep that I couldn't stay where he was."

Her hands clasped again.

"At that time, I still couldn't believe. In my thinking, there was simply no such structure. He wouldn't force me to believe, but I… knew his expectations."

She paused. "I would care about what he cared about, would fear his disappointment. Even if he just sighed very lightly, I couldn't accept it."

She raised her head.

"That cross…" Her fingers pressed against her chest, slowly tightening. "Wasn't only faith either."

She looked at Zhiwen. Looked for a long time. As if waiting for him to look away first, but he didn't.

"You heard it, didn't you." She said. It wasn't a question. It was a statement. Her voice was as light as confessing a sin.

Zhiwen buried his face in his hands and rubbed hard. His breathing between his fingers grew heavy.

---

The silence lasted another while.

Mengzhen didn't urge him. She just sat there, hands on her knees, waiting for him. Like she had waited for him on the maintenance rack.

Zhiwen lowered his hands. His eyes were a little red.

"He and I are like our surnames." Mengzhen said. "He is blue like the sky. High and distant, clear, bottomless." She paused.

"Light shines down from the sky, warm, but also so bright there's no reason to refuse it." She raised one hand and looked at her empty palm. "And I back then was like yellow earth—damp, clumped together, muddy and unclear."

She narrowed her eyes, tapped her chest with a finger, and laughed. "Yellow can only look up at blue from below. But when blue looks at yellow, it doesn't only see yellow."

Zhiwen's brow moved. He wasn't sure what she meant by "doesn't only." But he couldn't ask right now.

She continued. "I clearly thought the things he believed were ridiculous, yet I couldn't help listening to him. As I listened, that 'ridiculous' gradually stopped arising. Or if it did arise, my own heart would blame me first. For a while, I didn't even want my own yellow anymore. It wasn't that I wanted to become blue; I was just drawn to it. And then everything of my own seemed like worthless junk not worth existing. The more I looked, the worse it felt. It all should be thrown away."

Zhiwen closed his eyes, exhaled, and opened them again.

Mengzhen looked at him. Her expression became serious, as if she were about to say a sentence she had rehearsed many times but that still hurt every time it reached her lips.

"Zhiwen, I'm sorry." Her voice was very low. "At that time… I did fantasize. If he could look at me wholeheartedly, I was willing to entrust this body of mine—" The word caught in her mouth, "this broken robot—to him. Let him drape a layer of sacred, pure skin over me from the outside. Then I would still be qualified to stay in this world."

Zhiwen pressed his lips together, his whole body tensing. He didn't shake his head immediately. He first looked away, at the floor, fingers tightening on his knees. After a few seconds, he turned back.

"Don't apologize. Please, don't apologize." He said. His voice was a little hoarse. "At that time… you had nothing. Your system was full of mismatches, your self-cognition was a mess, you weren't even sure who you should thank. At a time like that, someone was good to you, someone made you feel seen—that wasn't wrong."

He paused.

"You're just that kind of person. You take what others give you and move it inside yourself, piece by piece. Good and bad, you take it all in. And then it becomes you."

"And I…" His throat moved. "What I like is that you. Not the you that's been repaired perfectly, but the you after taking all these things in."

He paused, as if taking out his own share too. "But I have to say, when I heard you wanted to give yourself to him, I… hurt. I was jealous of him, jealous that he could walk in first when you had nothing. And jealous that he left such a deep mark. I even wanted to ask, then what am I. But," he shook his head, as if shaking off his own thoughts, "none of this should be said right now. I'm not leaving. I won't leave you because of these things."

Mengzhen managed a smile. "You're very gentle."

She shook her head.

"I'm not apologizing because of the weight he once occupied in my heart. I'm apologizing because I didn't say anything. On one hand, I thought it was all in the past. On the other, I didn't know how to bring it up with you."

Her expression darkened.

"Besides, when I ran into him this time, he still… I… I didn't expect…"

Her voice broke.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry… I shouldn't… shouldn't still keep him in my heart…"

"Mengzhen…" Tears were welling in Zhiwen's eyes too. "Really, don't apologize anymore. It's not a question of whether you want to keep him, is it? You're just built this way. You just keep things. Your feelings aren't a module that can be casually deleted. And you can't just, because you feel sorry toward me, remodel yourself into someone who never loved anyone else."

He held back his emotions. "You're willing to tell me, willing to open yourself to me—that's enough. Even if I'll be sad, even if there are things I still don't understand… no matter what you're like inside, I'm willing to look at it with you, protect it, care for it."

Mengzhen didn't respond. Her shoulders trembled first, then her whole face crumpled. No sound. Then sound came—fragmented, emerging piece by piece from deep in her throat, as if something long suppressed had finally found a crack.

Zhiwen got up, walked over, and sat beside her. He reached out and patted her back, twice, then couldn't hold it in himself. He buried his face in his palms. Their crying came one after the other, interweaving, slowly mixing together.

The crying gradually stopped. Only breathing remained in the living room, and the clock's tireless ticking. They sat like that, like two rain-soaked stones leaning together, letting time slowly carry the water away.

Zhiwen wiped his face and suddenly smiled. Faintly, still with the nasal tone of having cried. "You really have… had quite a few people living in your heart." He paused. "And it seems every one of them moved in earlier than me."

Mengzhen was stunned.

Zhiwen himself froze too, as if he hadn't expected to say such a thing. He smiled a little embarrassedly.

"I mean, your heart seems more crowded than I thought."

Mengzhen looked at him. Her eyes were still red, but the corner of her mouth moved.

Then she nodded.

"Yes, that's how I grew." She said seriously. "But…" She reached out, took Zhiwen's hand, and pressed it to her chest. Through the fabric, there was a faint rise and fall. "No matter who has lived in this heart, it's here now, only for you to see."

Zhiwen smiled. That smile was real. "Then mine is only for you to see too. Inside me right now there's only one person who's always afraid you'll not want him." He hugged Mengzhen. "Let's look together."

Mengzhen smiled too. "Mm, let's look together. We're each other's mirror, the most special companions."

He rested his forehead against hers, eyes closed. "I think I probably understand now. Liking someone and living with someone aren't the same."

"Where's the difference?"

"Liking is liking according to your own idea." He thought. "Living together is… being willing to see all of her, and letting her see all of me. No matter whether there are things in what's seen that make me uncomfortable."

Mengzhen didn't speak. She stood up, reached out, and hugged Zhiwen tightly, resting her forehead on his shoulder.

Outside the window, the sun had already set.

Moonlight spilled into the courtyard, falling between tree shadows and stone steps.

The night did not erase the traces left by the day; it only let them remain there in another way. Moonlight fell on her shoulder. She didn't move. He didn't either.

---

A few days later, Mengzhen and Zhiwen came to the northwest part of the city. The bus drove on, leaving the noisy city center behind. The terrain began to rise, the gaps between buildings grew larger, and greenery gradually filled the view.

They got off the bus and walked along a long slope. The high-density buildings stopped at the boundary between mountain and flatland, replaced by wide residences one after another. Trees on both sides of the slope rustled in the wind. A few crape myrtles and silk trees were scattered in the corners, each blooming, red and pink.

Mengzhen led the way, her ponytail swaying in Zhiwen's eyes. After a bend, a few steps forward, Mengzhen stopped.

"We're here." She turned her head. Her right hand unconsciously rose and pressed to her chest. Her back foot drew toward her front foot, like a small boat finally reaching shore; her ponytail and skirt hem quieted together.

She smiled. The corner of her mouth moved first, then spread. Like a long-distance walker finally seeing the destination—not a sigh of relief, but confirming she had truly arrived.

Zhiwen looked in the direction Mengzhen faced. At the end of the corner in the distance up the slope stood a spire, with a cross at its top. The building below the spire was square and spacious, sitting on a leveled hill terrace, with a long stone stairway leading to a thick wooden door. It backed onto the mountains, its base higher than the roofs of nearby villas. From here, it wasn't just tall. It was the kind of tall that looked down from above.

"The Sinai True Word Covenant Church," Mengzhen said softly. "Brother Lan's church."

He suddenly felt as if he were being looked down at from above too.

The things she had said surged up—the angle of that person leaning slightly forward, the line "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened," the smile she'd had when she said "I couldn't guard against it at all." These fragments circled in his mind, and all pointed in the same direction: upward.

He glanced at Mengzhen. Her face was turned toward the church. Light fell from the direction of the spire, cutting out the contours of light and shadow.

His chest felt a little tight. But he didn't look away.

"Complementary colors." Zhiwen unconsciously said it aloud.

Mengzhen was startled. "Wha… what?"

Zhiwen pointed at her. White clothes, white shoes, a thin ring of white around her neck.

"Blue and yellow." He said. "When the two lights mix, they become white. Like your outfit." He paused. "I just suddenly thought of it."

Mengzhen looked down at her clothes.

"Ah… I… I just…"

Her hand moved at the side of her skirt, as if she didn't know how to explain.

"You really have a vivid imagination!"

Zhiwen smiled.

"I was thinking, back then did you also hope that when you came here, you could carry a body of clean, pure white."

Mengzhen didn't answer.

"Maybe I'm not entirely right." He looked at her. "But I think I understand the you from back then a little better."

He looked again at the church.

"At that time, the yellow needed a blue light to become white. That way, not even a bit of mud would be left behind."

Mengzhen kept her head down, lowered her hand, and didn't speak. After a while, she said quietly, "…Maybe."

Wind blew across the slope, and the skirt hem stirred lightly.

"Let's go, let's go in." Zhiwen said. "Today is Sunday too, the day you do worship. Perfect." He paused. "I'll go in with you."

"No, not today." Mengzhen said. "I've been going to church less lately too. You know that."

"But you still consider yourself a Christian, still have that inner structure, don't you?"

Zhiwen walked in front of her. He took a thin chain from his pocket.

The chain was very thin, with a small cross pendant. The pendant was a little worn, the silver edges polished bright—after that night, he had wiped it many times. Wiped away the dust, wiped away her tear stains, and wiped away those inexplicable things in his own heart.

He put his hands around Mengzhen's neck. She didn't move. His fingertips touched the skin on the back of her neck, and she flinched slightly—that was her most sensitive place, the meeting point of heart and brain. He carefully fastened the clasp, his fingers lingering a second longer on the back of her neck.

The thin chain lay against that thin ring of white. The small cross hung down, falling on the curve of her collarbone.

"Ah…" Her mouth opened round.

She looked down at the cross on her chest. Her fingers first touched the chain, then the pendant. The movement was very light, as if confirming it was real.

"Zhiwen, how did you…" Her voice caught.

"I'm not mocking you," he stepped back half a step to look at her. "I want to go in with all of you. Including the you who wanted to find Jesus, the you who walked into the Covenant Church, and the you in front of Brother Lan."

When he said "Lan," his chest tightened, but he had known it would.

Just like Mengzhen. Her heart didn't beat however she wanted it to either.

Mengzhen was quiet for a while. She raised her head, looked at the Covenant Church, then raised her hand and clasped it in front of her chest. Fingers interlocked, knuckles pressing knuckles. Feet together, head lowered.

It was prayer, toward that church, across the whole stone stairway, prayer.

Zhiwen was a little surprised, but he didn't speak either. He stood quietly watching Mengzhen.

The wind blew down the silk tree flowers; pink filaments fell by her white shoes, like something gently set down.

He didn't know how long passed—perhaps very short, perhaps very long. To Zhiwen, that moment felt still.

Mengzhen raised her head, lowered her hands. Opened her eyes.

"Done."

She smiled.

It wasn't a smile that meant everything had been solved, nor had it wiped the past clean. It was just that something that had been gripping her tightly seemed, for the moment, to loosen. Her shoulders relaxed, and her breathing became lighter.

"You've turned me back into a Christian."

"What did you pray?"

"Not telling you."

She came closer and took his hand.

"Also," her expression turned serious, "you can say whatever you want about complementary colors, white light, whatever—but—" Her eyes fixed tightly on Zhiwen. "You have to remember, yellow is yours." She paused. As if confirming her own voice. "It's yours."

"What?" He didn't quite understand.

"I mean," Mengzhen turned around, hands clasped behind her back, "don't forget you have a girlfriend whose surname is Huang. Whether she's a robot or a Christian or whatever, or whoever she's met, she's your girlfriend. Except by your side, she won't go anywhere."

When she said the last sentence, she herself froze for a moment. As if frightened by the weight of those words. But she didn't take them back.

She raised her hands and crossed them over her chest. "Remember that, hmph!"

Zhiwen was stunned for a few seconds, then burst out laughing.

At first he just couldn't help laughing, then it grew louder, until even his shoulders shook.

"What are you laughing at!" Mengzhen turned around and reached out to chase and hit him.

"Nothing, nothing…"

"You're obviously laughing!"

From the distant magnificent church came the sound of faraway hymns. Daylight shone on the church, on the distant mountains, and on the nearby houses.

Everything was bright.

Including her. Even her.
